Bill Hinsch’s painting,
“Ohioans in Space” pays homage to four of the most distinguished astronauts in the annals of space exploration. These remarkable individuals, hailing from Ohio, are celebrated for their iconic missions that have left an indelible mark on history. Their stories continue to inspire generations of Americans. The recent unveiling of this painting in Ohio’s Statehouse rotunda sparked the inception of a documentary by LoudKid Films. This documentary aims to honor these exceptional astronauts, whose significance in space history is unparalleled. Their invaluable contributions to the exploration of space defy estimation.

The "Mount Rushmore" of Astronauts

Ohio’s storied contribution to space exploration is brilliantly encapsulated in a stunning 12 ft x 9 ft painting, gracing the Ohio Statehouse Rotunda. This artistic marvel, created by internationally renowned Ohio artist William Hinsch, celebrates the state’s pivotal role in the saga of space travel.

The painting is a tribute to some of the most renowned astronauts of all time, each with deep roots in Ohio. It immortalizes John Glenn’s historic orbit around the Earth on Friendship 7, marking a significant milestone in the space race. The legendary Neil Armstrong, on the Apollo 11 mission, is depicted taking humanity’s first steps on the lunar surface. Jim Lovell’s extraordinary leadership in the Apollo 13 mission is showcased, turning a potential catastrophe into a remarkable story of survival and

determination. The artwork also honors Judy Resnik, one of the first female astronauts, who pioneered the use of the robotic arm on the Space Shuttle and set new precedents for women in space.

These astronauts were not just participants in space missions; they were trailblazers who pushed the limits of human endeavor and expanded our understanding of the universe. Their courageous journeys have been beautifully captured in Hinsch’s painting.

What started with the painting now continues in our effort to create a documentary paying homage to Ohio astronauts. Anyone can become part of this effort, and help us fund the production by donating (and getting gifts for this) or buying items like prints signed by Bill Hinsch, or the book “OHIO: Cradle of Astronauts” by Lisa Nicely.
